This morning I had the "pleasure" of taking Peeka to a rabies clinic to get her shots.
I anticipated it being a miserable experience and indeed it was.
Beginning with getting her into the truck. I had to stand in the back of the truck to pull her into the bed of it, by her leash, because she doesn't know how to jump into the back of a truck either.
Then we had to drive to Cal-Ranch. Thirty minutes away from our house, terrified the entire time that she was going to jump out of the truck. Every time we stopped at a stop light and she stuck her front legs over the side of the bed I was freaking out inside, trying to locate the hazard light button so I would know where it was in case I had to use it.
Then she would sometimes lay down so that I couldn't see her, leaving me searching in my rear view mirror for a yellow lab cartwheeling down the highway!
At Cal-Ranch we get into the store and Peeka is the ONLY dog frantically barking like a maniac!
The vet comes over and asked if I was alone. Instantly regretting my decision to be there at all I said, "Yes."
So he sent me to the back of the line advising me to keep Peeka at a distance from the other dogs.
She continued barking and jumping up on me, pulling my pants a little farther down with every jump.
I finally got her to sit between my legs for a few moments until they came over with the paperwork.
Yeah right, like that is going to happen.... looks like a first grader filled it out, but it got done.
I finally make it to the front of the line and the vet is trying to ask me about what shots she's had. I'm trying to show him her record and he says, "Give me the paper, while you control your dog."
Haha that's funny! Only because it is physically IMPOSSIBLE for me to do that.
Then he wants me to further control her by holding her head still while he gives her the shot in her back. Again, not gonna happen. But the 4 other vets techs standing nearby apparently don't believe that I cannot handle it.
I am sweating bullets all the way to the crack of my butt trying to hold her still. The vet was not impressed when her head got loose and tried to nip him as he was finishing the shot.
Instead of getting the rundown of what to look for as far as side effects from the shot Peeka just had (like the couple with the two well behaved dogs in front of me got), I got the speech about how a muzzle may be good for Peeka. He doesn't know if Cal-Ranch carries them, but apparently they have a calming effect on dogs AND keep them from barking too!
NOTED.
On the way home I opened the back window to try and keep her head near the window instead of wanting to possibly try jumping out of the truck, but instead she squeezed her whole body through it and got massive amounts of her hair all over Kyle's truck, which I now have to go vacuum.
BUT at least she didn't fall out onto the highway...
I told Kyle that he is for sure taking Peeka for her next set of shots. I am not qualified.

Dogs in the back of trucks scare me. I personally know a dog that fell out and had to get his leg amputated. I’d bite the bullet and keep them in the truck whether needing to vacuum or not. Or lay a blanket down. Have you considered a training camp? They take your dog for as long or short as they think necessary or for however long you want to leave them. I believe there is one in Orem. Thor has never been an issue though. Good luck Amber!
